Friday Opinion by Geoff: What will development be like in the next 10-20 years?
When Glav picked this topic, I was a little disconcerted. I'm no crystal ball gazer, and given the leaps and bounds that the computer industry moves in, I really don't think I can have a hope of getting this right.
But then I thought about what I want, as opposed to what it will be, and it ended up that my answer to that is quite easy to determine.

The zen of computing is what I want. I want to be at one with the code. I want to think the code.
I want to be the code. That's where I want development to go.
Many years ago I first read Neuromancer. If you're a geek and you haven't read it, shame on you. That's where I want development to go. (Well, except the hacking part :)
It's not that I want Virtual Reality (which really seems to have died a big death lately). I want to join with the computer, and do what I need to on some lower level that finger typing and mouse dragging. I want to think my code into existance.
Sure, non-developers migth use the computer in the same way, but it's different as a developer. A normal user would just think at the computer what they want to happen. A developer would think what they want the computer to do, and how to do it.
And that the best answer I can give for this weeks opinion peice. I just want to plug myself in, and build :)
And learn Kung Fu.
