Do I plan to run Vista as my OS in Beta2?
Today Rocky e-mailed to ask me about Vista and how I felt about the current build that I'm running. I thought about it for a while and then replied with a response that was designed to give him some idea about my plans for running Vista as of Beta 2. Now bear in mind that Beta 2 will not come with a recommendation to run it as your main OS - but we are Readify and we tend to take dogfood pretty seriously
. What follows is my response to Rock:
The version that I’m currently running:
- Build 5382
- WinFX
- Office 12
Is pretty stable and the UI seems to be rock solid. It has only crashed a couple of times and that is only when it puts itself into hibernate mode; when you wake it up it complains about some memory issue – but it just needs a restart.
The buggiest stuff has been comms. I consistently have trouble getting on the VPN and I haven’t managed to login under our domain as yet. But e-mail (on Outlook 2007) is working pretty well. Now bear in mind that I haven't really even given it a solid dev. pounding. I've run a few workflow demo's and some simple WCF and .NET Remoting stuff but nothing that I'd feel comfortable walking into a client and sitting down for a day's work with (mind you that's exactly what I will be doing tomorrow
).
Personally I’d still go for the dual boot myself. At least that’s what I’m planning to do when I have to give this machine back in a couple of months. But heck, in that time it’ll be tens of thousands of man hours down the track, so who knows!
